Activated with water, the polymer binds the sand together to lock everything in place, keep weeds out, and add years to the surface. Product composition
- Polymer content: The polymer is what binds the sand together once it’s watered in, so a higher-quality mix of sand, polymer, and other ingredients generally gives you a stronger, longer-lasting bond.
- Grain size: Grain size affects how well the sand fills the joints. Fine sands pack into narrow joints; coarser sands suit wider gaps.
Weather resistance
This is the one that separates products built for Canada from the rest.
- Freeze-thaw resistance: Our winters swing hard between freezing and thawing, and that movement is what cracks and loosens joints over time. Look for a sand specifically formulated to resist freeze-thaw damage.
- Temperature tolerance: Polymeric sand needs the right conditions to cure. Some products only set properly in warmer weather (above 60°F/15°C), while others are made to cure across a broader range. For our climate, choose one rated for varying temperatures.
- Rain resistance: Some brands claim their sand resists rain shortly after installation, so a surprise shower won’t wash it out of the joints. In a region with unpredictable weather, that’s worth having.
Colour and UV resistance
- Colour: Polymeric sand comes in a range of colours to match your pavers. Beige, grey, and black are the most common, though some brands offer more unusual tones. Pick what looks best with your stone.
- UV resistance: The joints sit out in full sun and rain year-round. A sand with UV protection holds its colour longer and resists fading.
Dust-free and low-dust options
Some sands are sold as dust-free or low-dust. They make less mess and are less likely to leave a haze on the paver surface, which is worth considering if you’re installing it yourself.
Weed and insect resistance
One of the main reasons to use polymeric sand is that it blocks weed growth and ant infestations. Some brands add properties — antimicrobial agents, for example — that strengthen that protection. If weeds are a persistent problem where you live, choose a sand specifically marketed to keep them from taking hold between the pavers.
Ease of application
- Fast-setting formulas: Sands with a fast-setting formula, or ones that need less water to activate the polymer, make the job easier. Product instructions and user reviews are a good gauge of how simple a sand is to work with.

A few polymeric sand brands are well established in Canada. It’s always worth researching reviews or asking a local contractor which they prefer — they tend to have real experience with how a product performs and holds up over time.
